BRAND / Blackwing Pencils
Blackwing pencils are widely regarded as the finest pencil ever made, and have accumulated a cult following since it became known that several eminent 20th century writers and artists swear by them. Fans of the pencil include John Steinbeck who wrote Of Mice and Men with one, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein and even Bugs Bunny and countless other Looney Tunes characters were created and sketched using a Blackwing pencil.
It's roots go back to the 1930’s when it was first introduced by Eberhard Faber. Sadly in 1998, after several corporate acquisitions, it was discontinued, but certainly forgotten about. In fact, Blackwing fans began paying as much as £30 on eBay for a single Blackwing pencil.
Artists from across the world soon noticed that Palamino's range provided a performance like no other and asked the Palamino to consider reviving the iconic brand. Palomino founder and CEO Charles Berolzheimer, whose family’s roots in the pencil industry date back to the mid 19th century, used his unique supply relationships to re-introduce the Blackwing pencil, both in its original form (the “602”) for devotees, writers and everyday users, as well as a modified version with a slightly softer lead for artists.
Claimed by many to be the best writing utensil in the world, Blackwing pencils are famous for the quality of Japanese graphite, iconic shape, and the men and women whose works they’ve inspired throughout the years. Their iconic pencils are made in Japan using renewable Californian Incense Cedar. The replaceable erasers are much more efficient than standard pencil erasers due to their flat ends.

BLACKWING 602 - THE ORIGINAL
Palomino Blackwing 602 is the original pencil. It uses a firm and smooth graphite core that helps it deliver on its promise of “Half the Pressure, Twice the Speed.” Blackwing 602 pencils feature a gunmetal grey finish and iconic square Blackwing ferrule with a pink eraser.
The Blackwing Pearl features a pearl white finish, gold imprint, white eraser, and a balanced and smooth graphite core that is softer than the graphite found in the Blackwing 602, but firmer than the graphite found in the Blackwing.
Ideal for musicians, woodworkers and anyone who prefer a soft, dark line, the Palomino Blackwing is the softest of the three core Blackwing models. Blackwing pencils feature a timeless matte black finish, iconic square Blackwing ferrule and black eraser.
The 1970s outlaw country movement had many influences, but perhaps none were more important than legendary raconteur Guy Clark. He and his wife Susanna opened their Nashville home to generations of groundbreaking artists over the years, giving them a space to create songs that broke down the walls built by mainstream country music.
Guy’s debut album Old No. 1 is regarded as one of the most influential ever made. Ripe with poetic mastery and extraordinary characters, it introduced people to a new quality of songwriting fueled by authenticity and substance. Guy rejected a proven formul-a for airplay and stardom in favor of writing his mind and recording with acoustic instruments that allowed the stories to take center stage.
The Blackwing 1 is a nod to Guy Clark and his perfectly imperfect style. Blackwing’s first round pencil features a matte grey washcoat finish that lets the wood grain show through, a “blue collar” eraser that pays tribute to Guy’s favorite blue shirt, and balanced graphite perfect for songwriting.
