MEET THE MAKER / Andrea Hawkes

We're very lucky to have one of our favourite London bridal boutiques - Andrea Hawkes Bridal - just down the road.  We spent 5 minutes chatting with them to find out a little bit more about them...

Tell us a little bit about AHB and how it all started?

AHB started after having worked for some of the best British bridal designers within production, sales and fittings – over the years of experience I started to feel there was a need for a more stripped back, contemporary bridal company. We make everything ourselves in house and offer a more relaxed less stuffy approach to having a wedding dress made.

The idea was born between the brains of my other half who helps me run the business and my brother who works in branding. I’ve also met lots of talented individuals along the way who helped me develop my first collection of key shapes which can be adapted to suit the individual. Some of which are still part of the close knit team we have developed.

What's your signature style and what inspires your designs and materials?

I think our style is classic and contemporary with a hint of tradition! We make classic shapes with a contemporary, sharp finish for the modern bride. We love traditional couture finishes such as handmade buttons and loops and perfectly finished pin hems!

We have a huge appreciation for quality of fabrics – this definitely stems from my background with working for luxury bridal designers who have always used the best quality fabrics. That has never left me and I feel so passionate about making all our dresses inside and out in natural fabrics. I think our brides really notice it and appreciate our fussiness…

We source the most beautiful quality silks, textured fabrics and lace for our brides. So our clients are always guaranteed a perfect finish and fit.

How long is the process to make a single wedding dress?

An amazing amount of time goes into each dress that we make in our London studio. It could be weeks / months as we hand pattern, cut and make each dress to order. We also hold a number of fittings and of course our lovely Siobhan is also here to look after each one of our brides during the whole journey with us.

Have you a favourite dress that you've designed so far over the years?

I enjoy creating the collections each year and just love it when I see someone in one of our dresses. That’s such a special feeling. I particularly love our bias cut dresses. They’re so elegant with a minimal twist. We can make so many adaptions to these shapes to make them individual.

Describe a day in the Andrea Hawkes studio?

Busy! We are always working on something new. Whether it be our lovely brides dresses and our bespoke dresses. We also seasonally work on new collections which is always a very exciting feeling within the studio as the whole team get involved in developing new shapes and ideas. As busy as we are, we always make time for a slice of cake and a cuppa as a team!

What's next for Andrea Hawkes?

We have lots of exciting things happening at AHB. We will be renovating our boutique to make it an even better space for our brides, we like to keep things fresh. Expanding our production studio here in London. As we grow we are needing more space and new members to join our team. We will also be showing our collections again in London, also at Barcelona and New York bridal weeks as our stockists grow throughout the UK AND Europe.
