Workshop FAQs

Help, they are all sold out or I can't make any of the listed dates! What can I do?

Thank you for your interest in our workshops! Sign up here to be kept informed of any newly released dates.

Can I be placed on a wait list for a specific class?

We're unable to take requests for interest in specific dates. As soon as we have new dates available, our waiting list will be notified, and they will be booked on a first-come-first-served basis.

What happens if I'm unable to attend a class I've booked?

Bookings are non-refundable and non-changeable to a different class date, so please make sure you can attend the class before you book. We are sorry to say that if you find yourself ill, stuck at work, double-booked or otherwise unable to attend a class at the last minute we are unable to switch your booking to another date.

Can I switch the date of the class that I have booked?

Unfortunately, we are unable to change the date of your booking.

Is the venue accessible to wheelchairs?

We are in a Grade2 llisted Georgian building which cannot be modernised. There are three steps into our studio.

Are the classes suitable for children?

For public classes at our studio, we welcome all ages, however if your child is younger than 14 and would like to attend, they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We have found that kids over 12 get the most from the class, as the class length requires intense and sustained focus for younger kids.

How long are the classes?

Group classes are at 2.5 hours long for beginners level, and up to 3 hours for level 2. Please see the individual workshop listing, which will state the timing of the class.

Where are the classes held?

Classes are held in various locations in Central London and occasionally across the UK, but most frequently at our shop/studio at 37 Amwell Street, London EC1R 1UR (nearest tube is Angel). Please refer to the individual workshop listing to see which venue it is being held at. Each workshop listing states the full address of the venue.

How do I get to your shop/studio at 37 Amwell Street?

In terms of travel the nearest tube station is Angel – we're about a 5-10 minute walk from the tube. Alternatively we're a 15-20 minute walk from King's Cross station. If you are planning to travel via car please note Amwell street is in the congestion zone and parking outside of the shop is monitored between 8:30am and 6:30pm. Payment is required during those hours, but otherwise parking will be free.

When I book my class online, what will I receive?

You will be sent an email confirmation of your booking. No other e-tickets or posted tickets will be sent.

I would like to give a class as a gift, what would you recommend I do?

We would recommend that you purchase one of our workshop gift vouchers as a gift. This will then enable them to review their preferred class dates, before booking in on the one which suits them. If you book a specific class on their behalf, we are unable to transfer their date or refund you if they cannot make it.

Do I need to bring anything to class?

Nothing at all! You will be provided with everything you need for class - including all materials. Refreshments will also be provided.

Please note that the calligraphy ink we use during our workshops is waterproof and will not come out of clothes, so please dress accordingly.

What will I learn in the Beginners Modern Calligraphy class?

Our experts will take you through the basics of Modern Calligraphy. First you will be introduced to contemporary calligraphy and then you'll work on exercises to practice making shapes, strokes and letters. By the end of the workshop you'll be well on your way to writing your chosen phrase or quote in your own personal free style. It's a lot harder than it looks! So we also offer improvers classes should you want to develop your skills.

What will I learn in the Brush Lettering class?

You'll work on exercises to practice making shapes and brush strokes. You'll then practice writing words in broad stroked uppercase and thin stroked lowercase with plenty of help and guidance on hand. By the end of the workshop you'll be well on your way to developing your own personal brush lettering style.

Do I need experience?

Our Beginners Modern Calligraphy and Brush Lettering classes are designed for complete beginners. For the improvers class you will need to have a good understanding of the modern calligraphy letterforms and techniques.

I have done copperplate calligraphy before, is the Modern Calligraphy class suitable for me?

Yes, while modern calligraphy is based on traditional copperplate letter forms, the feel is more contemporary, dynamic and free. In this class we will encourage you to develop your own personal style.

Do you run private classes?

Yes! We can arrange private classes, corporate events & hen parties - just drop us line by email to hello@quilllondon.com with as much information as possible, and we will respond with a quotation.

Do you recommend any specific supplies?

We stock a whole host of supplies, perfect for post-class practice, including paper, nibs, ink, brushes and pen holders. Click here to see what's in store now.

Is there a difference in the class depending on the Tutor listed to teach the workshop?

There is no difference to the content of the workshop you are taught, all of our tutors teach the same content so you will come away with exactly the same knowledge no matter which one of our tutors teaches the class you attend.
